EASY HAM AND CHEESE HOWLER RECIPE
These howlers start from scratch with a pre-made refrigerated pie crust.
Cut up your crust into a 7×7 inch square.
Then place slices of thick ham in the center along with some brown sugar for flavor and cheese.
Start folding your sides into an envelope shape until all sides are folded up.
They are then topped with an egg was before baking in the oven at 375 for 20 minutes.
HAM AND CHEESE HOWLER RECIPE INGREDIENTS
Here are the basic ingrediants needed to make these fun foods.
Refrigerated Pie Crust – pick this ingredient up at the store. It is much easier than making your own from scratch. If you want to make your own, by all means. But you’re going to need this.
Boneless Pre-Sliced Quarter Ham– I used a pre-sliced half ham for like $7. Ham steak will also work well. Deli ham will be ok as well but I prefer the thicker slices for this recipe.
Brown Sugar – is a regular ingredient that I use in practically everything. It adds the perfect pop to enhance the flavor of the ham.
Shredded Cheese – I used a shredded Colby Jack but you can use whatever shredded you have available. Cheddar, Mozzarella, swiss, whatever you think would taste well with Ham.
Large Eggs – are a very versatile ingredient that can be used in many different recipes from breakfast to our favorite dessert recipes.
Edible Markers – In order to create the face for our Howler, you’re going to need something to use to create the eyes. Edible Marker are your best bet.

HOW TO MAKE HOWLERS
There are three simple steps to making these savory ham and cheese Howlers.
- Preheat the oven to 375*F.
- Get your refrigerated pie crust ready to go by unrolling it out flat. Cut your crust into a 7-inch by 7-inch square. (Save your scraps to roll out and create another square later.)
- Place 1-2 slices of ham in the middle of your square. Sprinkle on 1/2 TBL of brown sugar onto your ham. Top it off with your shredded cheese.
- Rotate your crust so the bottom is pointed down. You are now going to fold your pastry into an envelope shape. Take the bottom corner and fold it until the point is in the middle of your pastry. Take the right side and fold the corner into the middle. Repeat with the left side, and ending with the top folded down to create the top flap of the envelope.
- Place your howlers onto a baking sheet. Beat your egg and water until it is all mixed and smooth. Brush on the egg wash on top of your howlers.
- Bake at 375*F for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
