Hercules Movie Night Recipe

Are you ready for the best movie night food ever?! This Hercules movie night is the best movie night food I have done so far. I was a little biased at this one because the food was more for me! But let’s get into it!

This is my favorite movie night! I even admitted it on my About Me Page

Do you love Greek food as I do? I am far from having a Greek heritage. I did grow up around a lot of Greek families in my hometown, I was around Greek food a lot. The biggest best thing to do when I was a teenager was the Greek Fest. All the kids that were cool, would be at the Greek Fest. There are also a ton of Greek restaurants around the town so take your pick of the amazing Greek food nearby.

So when this movie night was coming up, I was super excited to pull out some very well-known and delicious Greek recipes I would eat around town when I was younger. So let me show you all about it!

Hercules Movie Night Menu

I’m ready to show you how to make Spanakopita, which is a phyllo-wrapped spinach and feta mixture. I also made chicken gyros as well as my favorite Greek dessert, Baklava. If you don’t know what Baklava is, it is a phyllo and walnut-based dessert that is soaked in a honey syrup for that delicious sweetness.

Chicken Gyros – Hercules Movie Night Dinner

My kids love a good chicken wrap. I can sneak some tomatoes, lettuce, and cheese in them and they gobble them down.

Chicken gyros were the perfect food for this movie night. I love gyros and I love any excuse to eat pita bread.

This movie-night was made easy from this recipe from Recipe Tin Eats. Gyros are a really easy recipe to make and super delicious.

Combine your ingredients for your marinade and your diced chicken into a Ziploc bag and let it marinate for at least 4 hours.

You’ll want to make up your Tzatziki next. Shred your cucumbers and combine with your lemon juice, greek yogurt, salt and pepper, and garlic, and let that melt in the fridge until you are ready to assemble.

Once you are ready, fry up that chicken on a grill or in a pan on the stovetop for 2-3 minutes per side.

Then you are ready to assemble with your favorite toppings. Warm-up a greek pita in a pan on the stove for your wrap. Gyros are normally eaten with lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. Top it off with Tzatziki sauce and you are ready to eat it!

I really enjoyed this recipe. The marinade provided perfect flavor for the chicken and kept it even for a few days after in the fridge. It came out so nice and moist.

The Tzatziki sauce was also very easy to make and was the perfect flavoring for a Greek Gyro. I really enjoyed everything about this recipe and it came out perfect. There is nothing I would change about this recipe. I just KNOW you will love it as I did!

Spanakopita – Hercules Movie Night Appetizer

This recipe screams green. Spanakopita is a spinach and feta-filled phyllo dough-type appetizer. It’s so yummy and easy to make!

The original recipe I got from Dinner at the Zoo was just what I was looking for. I really wanted a spanakopita recipe that was wrapped tightly so nothing would fall out. So these triangle-shaped spanakopita were perfect!

You can use fresh spinach or frozen spinach with this recipe. And to be honest, I didn’t have enough fresh and needed more so I used some frozen spinach I had tucked away.

These are so yummy and hold up great for even a few days in the fridge.

The only thing I would probably change would be to not add so much dill next time. It was honestly just a personal preference for the next time I make her recipe.

So make up the filling with your spinach, onions, spices, and feta, and place about 1.5 teaspoons onto your phyllo dough. Fold them up into triangles and bake. They are seriously easy and yummy!

You can get the original recipe here at Dinner at the Zoo – Spanakopita Recipe.

Baklava – Hercules Movie Night Dessert

My favorite Greek dessert by far…Baklava! A walnut-filled phyllo dessert covered in honey syrup. So yummy!

I’ve made baklava before so I used this base recipe from All Recipes and added my own flavor into the syrup.

Phyllo gets nice and crispy because of the butter you brush on the phyllo in between all the layers. Start your recipe with 2 layers of phyllo, brush with butter, and continue until there are 8 total layers.

Then sprinkle your layers with 6 tables spoons of walnut mixture. The recipe states 3 tablespoons, but I like a little more in my layers. It’s just a personal preference.

The next layer should be 2 more layers of phyllo, brushed with butter, then continue layering with walnuts, and 2 more phyllo, until all the walnuts are used up. At the point when all the walnuts are used, top off your baklava with 2 layers of phyllo, brush with butter and continuing to layer until there are 8 total layers of phyllo.

Before putting it in the oven, cut up your baklava into triangles. Then back to you baklava at 350 for 50 minutes.

While it is baking you want to get your honey syrup ready. This is where I improvised from making baklava before. I followed the directions on All Recipes for the honey syrup, but I added 1/2 teaspoon of ground cloves and the zest of 1 lemon. It was the perfect addition to elevate my baklava recipe.

Once that baklava comes out of the oven, pour that beautiful syrup over the top of the baklava and let it soak into all those cracks and crevices. Let is sit for about 20 minutes before cutting even further and serving.

Greek Frappe – Hercules Movie Night Drink Recipe

When researching a drink recipe for our Hercules movie night. Frappe’s kept popping up. So I decided to make a Frappe Drink that is kid-friendly AND an adult-friendly version.

A frappe is basically a foamy coffee drink. If you know nothing about Greek culture, is they really like their coffee.

My base recipe is from Olivia’s Cuisine.

The adult version was followed exactly how she layed it out. I’ve never made my own frappe before, I never realized how easy it is! You really need to try this recipe because any iced coffee drinker will love this recipe.

You can get the original recipe here: Olivia’s Cuisine – Greek Frappe

Kid-Friendly Frappe

Looking for a kid-friendly version? I know my kids don’t need coffee in a frappe. They have enough energy for both of us.

Basically, we are just excluding the coffee portion in this frappe. The ingredients you will need are:

  • milk
  • sugar
  • caramel or chocolate syrup

Combine 1 cup of milk, 2 teaspoons of sugar, and 1 tablespoon of syrup into a cocktail shaker and shake it up for about 30 seconds to 1 minute until it is nice and frothy.

Then pour it out into a glass and you have a very easy, kid-friendly version of a Frappe. (This was my kid’s favorite part of the entire meal!
