Disney’s Soul Movie Night Party

Have you seen Disney’s Soul? If not go watch it! (Use these ideas to make an excuse to go have a Soul Movie Night!) The kids and I watched it just recently and really enjoyed it. They’ve already asked to watch it again.

Without giving anything away, the movie has a pretty in-depth meaning. If you can’t tell by the title, it has to with your Soul and the meaning of life what you think you are meant to do on earth. It’s a very sweet movie!

As I sat here watching the movie the first time around, I was looking for signs that I can make food from. The only thing I really found was NY-style pizza in the movie. While that was a FANTASTIC option, I decided to dig a little deeper.

The soul is about a middle school band teacher who wants to be a Jazz musician. Soul Music. His soul separates from his body. The theme of the food for this movie smacked me right in the face!

Soul food.

When I went on my journey to research making soul food for my movie night, I came across this amazing website that provided me with some great background on true soul food. If you want to know more about its history, read The Humble History of Soul Food

Taken directly from this website “This food genre, now associated with comfort and decadence, was born out of struggle and survival.”

I wanted to make sure I was doing this genre right in my meal. So here we go!

Soul Movie Night Menu

Pork is one of the main ingredients that has a big place with soul food.

So for our menu, I made pulled pork sandwiches, coleslaw, peach cobbler, and sweet tea. All very comfort-friendly foods associated with soul food. (And bonus, that my kids will eat!)

I would have made Mac and cheese, but I already made it recently with my Little Mermaid Movie Night.

Pulled Pork Sandwiches

This amazing recipe I found on google a while back and have been using it ever since. The recipe is a rub you put on the pork shoulder roast before letting roast in the crockpot for 8 hours on low.

OMG.

This pork is TASTY even without any BBQ sauce on it. We did, of course, but either way, it is fall-apart delicious!

For the original recipe, check out Kim’s Cravings

I used her rub suggestions which consist of:

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder

  • 2 teaspoons cumin

  • 2 teaspoons chili powder

  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

Then I seared all sides in a pan on the stovetop, before putting it in the slow cooker for 8 hours on low.

As you can see from the video, it came out falling apart!

“Soul” Slaw (Cole Slaw)

I’m going to go ahead and say it. Coleslaw is SO easy to make homemade. Buying the pre-shredded bag of cabbage mix is a huge money saver so you are not buying a whole head of 2 different cabbages, carrots, and in this instance broccoli.

Use the mix of mayonnaise, white vinegar, lemon juice, sugar, and salt and pepper. And you have yourself an easy homemade coleslaw mix!

Soul Movie Night Peach Cobbler

Soul movie night wouldn’t be complete without a comfort-worthy dessert recipe.

This peach cobbler was super simple to make and will take you no time to whip up for dessert for your soul movie night.

Slice up some peaches and bring that and 1 cup of sugar and 1/2 cup water to a boil, then simmer for about 10 minutes.

While that is simmering, melt a stick of butter in the bottom of a 9×13 baking dish. And start mixing your other cup of sugar with your flour and milk.

Pour the flour mixture on top of the butter and DO NOT mix it. It will rise as it is cooking.

Spoon the peach mixture on top of the flour mixture and slowly pour in the syrup. Also, DO NOT mix here.

Let it cook for about 30-45 minutes.

We LOVE ice cream so we served ours with vanilla ice cream, and it was SO delicious for a mid-movie snack.

More about the peach cobbler recipe is listed below.
