Princess and The Frog Movie Night Party

Mardi Gras is just around the corner! What better way to celebrate than a Princess and the Frog movie night. We definitely wore our beads and enjoyed great Louisiana cooking!

This movie-night was AMAZING from the beginning. We started right out the gate with some great comfort food and some even better music! My youngest daughter loved the music too. Every time music came on she got up and danced. It was so fun!

The food jumped out at me again for this movie! We made Tiana’s Gumbo and Beignets. I wanted the VooDoo to play a part in this movie so I made a layered drink, just for Dr. Facilier! I call it Dr. Facilier’s Voo Doo drink.

Tiana’s Famous Gumbo | Princess and the Frog Movie Night Recipe

Princess and the Frog movie night gumbo recipe

This original fantastic recipe is from The Gingered Whisk. She had an awesomely written recipe and SOLD me on a kid-friendly version of gumbo. So go check out the original.

I followed all her suggestions and even added kielbasa instead of andouille sausage as to not make it spicy for the kids. My mistake and opinion I do not want you to make. DO NOT add the creole seasoning to the entire pot if your kids don’t eat spicy things. This recipe was AMAZING in every way, but I was unaware that creole seasoning was as spicy as it was.

Instead, I learned to wait to add the creole seasoning and mix it into individual servings at the end, so the adults can have some spice, and the kids won’t have any at all.

Personally loved this recipe, it had great flavor. But leave out the creole to make it, even more, kid-friendly.

Tiana’s Man Catching Beignets | Princess and the Frog Movie Night Recipe

Princess and the frog movie night beignet recipe

Sorry, not sorry, but after making these I’m never going back to regular donuts. These were easy to make at home without too much fuss at all.

Some people are afraid to fry things at home, but honestly, it’s not so scary or hard at all. I don’t have a deep fryer. So I just use a regular deep pan on the stovetop and a bottle of vegetable oil. Don’t be afraid! It’s rather easy.

(Now that I’m writing this, I wonder if there is a recipe out there for air fryer beignets?! If you find a good one, reach out and let me know! I’d love to let you know about a healthier option!)

This recipe came from Baker by Nature. Her recipes always come out great for me and this one was no exception.

Whip up the batter up to a day in advance and leave it in the refrigerator until you are ready. At least 2 hours refrigerated is necessary though.

Once they’re ready, roll the dough out to 1/4 inch thick. If you take nothing else away from my recommendations, this is the MOST IMPORTANT PART. They will not cook all the way through if you make them any thicker. They will come out raw.

(I learned this the hard way! In fact, this whole movie night I learned things the hard way and I am passing this knowledge on to you. Spicy gumbo, raw beignets, and a drink I had to do a million times to get the layers to not mix together)

Fry them up for a minute, flip them over and cook for another minute. Take them out and let them dry on a layer of paper towels.

Then sprinkle them up with a ton of powdered sugar, and enjoy! They are delicious!

Dr. Facilier’s Voo Doo Layered Drink | Princess and the Frog Themed Recipe

Princess and the Frog movie night drink recipe idea. Layered drink idea

This drink is completely my own creation. Dr. Facilier’s outfit is defined by the distinct colors in his outfit. I wanted to repeat that in this drink recipe. I wanted a layered drink you can distinctly see the layers in.

In order to get a layered drink, you need to have all the different layers to have different levels of sugar content.

The ingredients are:

  • Grape Juice (with 36 grams of sugar)
  • Snapple Apple Juice (with 20 grams of sugar)
  • Sugar-Free Ginger Ale (0 grams of sugar)

To get the layers to stand out you have to start with the heaviest sugar content on the bottom and work your way up.

The second thing I had to discover was when the next layer is added to the previous, it must be poured in SUPER slow. If not, they will mix.

I found a winning combination by filling my glass with ice AND using a spoon. The ice slowed down the addition of the next layer, allowing it to sit on top of the previous.

I tried a bunch of different ways but I had to have the ice and the spoon to achieve this look. So if you are trying something like this in your home, these steps are necessary to create a drink that is layered.

The drink looks and tastes great mixed up too. So don’t get discouraged if you can’t get them to sit on top of one another. The color comes out a beautiful deep purple which fits quite nicely for Dr. Facilier as well.

But I’m so glad I fought and played with science today, to make a fun drink to celebrate our villain this week. I learned something and was able to pull it off! Let me know if you did too!

Princess and Frog Movie Night Craft Ideas

Ray Coffee Filter Fireflies

Coffee Filter Firefly craft idea for Princess and the frog movie night

This recipe I made on my own, adapted from the coffee filter butterflies you have probably seen before.

coffee filter craft for princess and the frog movie night

I started the girls with a coffee filter that we place inside a cake pan so as to keep the mess to a minimum

The girls both used different methods to paint their fireflies.

You can use bingo dabbers or watercolors to paint your coffee filters.

After they are dry, we sprayed them with water and let them dry.

When they were finished, we cracked open our glowsticks and tied them into the middle of the coffee filter. The girls loved being able to fly them in the dark, just like Ray!

Tiana’s Crown

I scoured the internet for an easy and cheap Princess Tiana crown that comes out looking rather good! (And that doesn’t send you all over town looking for the supplies.

This one from Sparkly Runner is a super cute and easy design for your very own crowns just like Tiana!

Tiana Paper Roll Craft

This paper roll craft is super easy to make because odds are you have all the supplies at home to make it.

This craft from Ruffles and Rainboots is easy enough for even me to do!

Time and Budget Saving Suggestions

So now I’ve provided all my recipes but how can you change this to make it your own?

My first suggestion is always to order out! Find a restaurant that makes gumbo and order that right up! Find a bakery that makes beignets and order those for your movie night too.

Prep everything the night before or the day before the save yourself some time.

Shop for all your ingredients ahead of time also. (If you want an easy printable ingredient list to take to the store with you, you can get access to that by joining my email list and getting access to my printable ingredient/shopping lists!)

Make It Your Own
